Rice Importers

Core requirements for licensed rice importers:

• Sign TransFair USA's License/Certification agreement to become a licensed importer.
• Purchase rice from certified Fair Trade cooperatives or companies registered as exporters by Fairtrade Labeling Organizations International (FLO). The list of certified producers and exporters is available from TransFair upon request.
• If buying from cooperatives, pay at least the Fair Trade minimum price, plus the organic premium (if relevant) and the Fair Trade premium. The minimum prices and premia follow the international standards set by FLO:

• If the market price rises above these levels, the Fair Trade minimum rises to the market price. The Fair Trade and organic premiums must then be paid on top of the market price.
• If re-selling Fair Trade Certified rice to packagers, these companies must be licensed by TransFair USA to display the Fair Trade Certified logo.
• Submit quarterly reports to TransFair detailing sales, purchases, prices paid, ship dates, contracts, proof of payment, etc. on Fair Trade rice transactions.
• Pay a certification fee to Trans Fair of US$0.025/lb. on Fair Trade Certified rice purchases.
• On request of the producer organization, make available up to 50% of the value of the contract in pre-financing or other credit facilities.
