Rice Program
From the foothills of the Himalaya to your family's table
Generations of small-scale rice farmers in Thailand and India have developed some of the world's most unique rices: sweet Basmati, aromatic jasmine, and even coral and violet varieties. Traditionally, these farmers have sold their rice to local middlemen rather than developing relationships with exporters. The low prices they receive often do not cover their costs of production, leaving them unable to repay the loans they need to buy seeds and fertilizer and further impoverishing their families.
Fair Trade certification ensures that rice farmers receive a fair price for their harvest, creates direct trade links between farmers and buyers, and provides access to affordable credit. Through Fair Trade, farmers and their families are earning a better income for their hard work - allowing them to hold on to their land, keep their kids in school, and invest in the quality of their harvest. Only by paying rice farmers fair prices can we ensure that these delicious, artisanal foods are available for generations to come.
Protecting the environment
On Fair Trade farms, producers must adhere to strict standards regarding the use and handling of pesticides, the protection of natural waters, virgin forest and other ecosystems of high ecological value, and the management of erosion and waste. Selling at Fair Trade prices enables small farmers to pay for organic certification and training in sustainable agriculture techniques. Half of Fair Trade Certified rice farms are currently organic, and other farms are currently in the process of conversion to organic standards.
A growing market
The US market for Fair Trade Certified products grew by 92% in 2003 and over 80% in 2004, and products are now available in over 30,000 retailers from over 400 companies. The launch of Fair Trade Certified rice in July of 2005 represents a new direction in the growth of Fair Trade products and relationships, with Fair Trade Certified rice available from Thailand, India, and Egpyt.
Consumer demand for socially responsible goods, including Fair Trade Certified products, is rising. An all-time high of 81% of Americans say they are likely to switch brands to help support a cause, when price and quality are equal. Fair Trade Certified, the most consumer-recognized label of social responsibility, is becoming an invaluable asset to businesses across the country.
