Day 12: Starbucks and the Small-Scale Farmer Loan Program

00000542.000000

In April 2009, Starbucks, TransFair USA, and Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) teamed up to increase support for small-scale farmers with a $20-million loan program. The Small Farmer Sustainability Initiative builds on Starbucks already well-established commitment to the small farmers who produce the majority of Starbucks’ coffee. Through this initiative, Fair Trade farmers now have access to the $12.5 million Starbucks has already invested in farmer loan programs through various social organizations located throughout Latin America, Africa, and Asia Pacific. This investment will help farmers increase their incomes, improve their family livelihoods, and promote sustainable community development.
